PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is now on a nine-game winning streak following an efficient scoring night inside Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. The 97-87 win improved the Greyhounds record to 21-3 (14-2 LSC).
ENMU controlled most phases of the game against UT Dallas despite trailing early in the contest. The Comets held an early 13-5 lead directly after the first media timeout, however the Greyhounds took control of the game near the under-8 timeout in the first half to take the lead the rest of the way.
Eastern knew that attacking the paint was going to be a key contribution to a winning recipe. The Hounds snagged 50 of their 97 points in the paint.
The Greyhounds came into the contest leading the conference in fastbreak points per game. They recorded 23 points in that fashion today.
Four different Greyhounds scored 17+ points in this outing.
Mo Austin led the way with 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Most notably, the sophomore made 11-of-12 shots from the charity stripe. Austin earned 16 of his points in the second half. The speedy guard continues to control possessions at a high-rate. He finished the day with nine assists compared to only one turnover. He also led the team with five steals.
Another key factor for ENMU was winning the battle for points off turnovers. Eastern scored 25 points on that side and gave up just four points off turnovers. The Hounds only gave up 11 turnovers and forced 17 against the Comets.
UT Dallas was effective from deep range. They shot 13-of-26 from three point land and saw key contributions from the bench.
Austin Abrams scored 20 points after going 8-for-11 on the afternoon. He is averaging 25.2 minutes per game as a junior. He is connecting on 47.6% from the floor. The Maryland native had four assists.
Treyvon Byrd is a fan-favorite to watch at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. He posted 18 points, four assists, three rebounds, a block, and a steal.
Jose Murillo was guarded well by the Comets as he only made 6-of-11 from the floor. The senior scored 17 points and was efficient going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. He earned seven rebounds and three blocks.
Kobe Smith (6 pts) and
Alex Alfaro (5 pts) led Eastern off the bench in the win.
The Greyhounds will travel to south Texas next week for a matchup on Thursday night against Texas A&M International. They will follow up the trip facing Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
