Softball defeats Black Hills State, falls to No. 11 Central Oklahoma

ENMU defeated Yellowjackets in game one before falling in game two to the Bronchos

EDMOND, Okla. – Eastern New Mexico softball finished day one of the OC/UCO Softball Festival with a win over Black Hills State, 9-1, followed by a loss to No. 11 Central Oklahoma, 6-5, after keeping the lead through the first six innings.

GAME 1: ENMU 9 – BHSU 1
Eastern New Mexico scored their first run of the game in the second inning by Emily Marsh from a single by Haleigh Pearce. Eastern followed with three more runs in the third after three singles from Haleigh Pearce, Natalie Rodarte, and Alexa Ayala and a double from Giazza Lopez.

Eastern added four more insurance runs in the top of the fourth followed by the final run of the evening in the top half of the seventh.

The Hounds played great defense against the Yellowjackets, keeping them from scoring in every inning of the game except the fourth where they earned their one and only run.

Miranda Guillen started the first game of the day for the Greyhounds and pitched six innings with two strikeouts and allowing two hits before freshman Angelina Rubalcava came in to pitch the final inning of the game. Rubalcava strikeout two batters allowing zero hits and zero runs.

Christina Meneses and Rodarte led the Hounds with two hits each while Meneses tallied three RBIs. Parisi, Lopez, Marsh, Marissa Rodriguez, Pearce, and Ayala each recorded a hit in the victory for ENMU.

"It was great to see Miranda and Angie (Angelina) both have success in the circle" commented head coach Amanda Fefel. "There were also multiple hitters in the lineup who contributed to our offensive production and I am proud of how we kept up our intensity for the whole game."

GAME 2: ENMU 5 – No.11 UCO 6
Eastern began the game against Central Oklahoma strong, scoring two runs in the second inning.

In the top of the third, Talia Martin walked and moved to third on two ground balls from Lopez and Marissa Rodriguez. Christina Meneses singled to left field and scored Martin to give the Hounds a 3-0 lead.

ENMU scored its final two runs in the fourth inning after Ayala hit a two-run home run over right field.

The Bronchos scored a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning before scoring five runs in the final frame to take a 6-5 win.

Meneses finished with a pair of hits (one double) and an RBI. Ayala, Samantha Parisi and Rodarte each registered a hit for the Hounds.

Rodriguez started in the circle after giving up five hits, five earned runs, and five walks. Jordan Rivera came in the game in the final inning and gave up a pair of hits and one earned run.

"It's never easy losing a game that you led the whole way until the final inning" continued Fefel. "We had a couple crucial errors that put unwanted pressure on our defense and we couldn't finish the game. I thought Marissa (Rodriguez) threw a gem of a game in the circle for us."

The Greyhounds will play again tomorrow, Feb. 8, against Fort Lewis College at 11 a.m. MT/ 12 p.m. CT and Oklahoma Baptist at 1:30 p.m. MT/ 2:30 p.m. CT.
