ENMU men's basketball falls in overtime in NCAA DII south central regional

Eastern New Mexico closes 2025-26 campaign with first round exit to St. Mary's

DALLAS, Texas – It took overtime to decide who would advance to the NCAA DII south central regional semifinals. Seven-seeded St. Mary's pulled off a stunning win over (2) Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, 73-70.

"St. Mary's did a great job coming out and being prepared," said head coach Daven Võ after the game. "They rebounded the ball very well."

The headline for the contest came during the game's final two possessions. Sophomore Mo Austin had just tied the game (68-68) after going one-on-one with a Rattler defender, and now left 35 seconds on the clock. St. Mary's drove down and missed a layup, but Rattler Wayne Wiggins battled for an offensive board by stripping it away from Jose Murillo and dished out the ball to teammate Damani Claxton. With 3.3 seconds left, Claxton had a déjà vu moment of his own as he connected on a three-pointer to put StMU up 73-70. It brought back a memory from a year ago when he hit what could have been a game winning shot just a year ago in the regional semifinals, but it was erased after a called timeout seconds prior.

With a three-point shot needed, that is what Võ and company planned for. Austin once again took up the ball and drained a three-pointer. The only problem? He did so as the clock hit triple zeros. The loud screams of the ENMU faithful quickly turned to celebration for StMU as the Rattlers advanced to the regional semifinals for a second-straight season.

Austin led the way for ENMU with 19 points, six assists, and three steals while playing 43 minutes. Cooper Jackson (14 pts) and Treyvon Byrd (11 pts) joined him in double figures. Jackson fouled out in the game after going 5-for-11 from the floor. He posted three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Byrd led the team with six rebounds.

StMU dominated the rebounding battle, 40-31. They were guided behind a 14-point, nine rebound outing from Olaverr Camacho. Damani Claxton had a team-high 15 points, including the game clinching shot. Also scoring in double figures was Eddie McPhee (11 pts), Sebastian Mendoza (10 pts), and Wayne Wiggins (10 pts).

Eastern was held to just 27-of-63 (42.9%) from the field. Going in, the matchup was going to be all about the battle in the paint. Both teams scored 42 points from that department. StMU's 17 offensive rebounds compared to 14 for the Hounds proved to be the final difference maker. Wiggins' final offensive rebound mattered the most and helped the Rattlers advance to the next round of the national tourney.

St. Mary's held the advantage most of the game, but both teams still had leads at various points. ENMU' biggest lead was six points (15-9) with 10:56 on the clock in the first half. The Rattlers led by nine points (45-36) with 12:01 remaining in the second half. There was a stretch later in the second period where Eastern stormed to take their first lead of the second half. In that time period, ENMU had made nine of their previous ten shots. The 12-2 run gave ENMU the 58-52 edge with 4:08 on the clock. Eddie McPhee tied the game, 61-61, with 1:55 left. No team would score in the final 115 seconds and forced the game into overtime.

Both squads stayed within two points the entire overtime period before Claxton connected on his three-point basket. The game clincher sealed the deal for StMU.

Eastern New Mexico finishes the season with 26 wins, which ties the school record for most wins in a single year. Jose Murillo also broke the school record for career rebounds. He finishes his Greyhound career with 725 total rebounds.
