Greyhounds season ends in NCAA DII South Central Regional

ENMU fell to top-seeded Texas Woman's, 68-49

DENTON, Texas - The Eastern New Mexico women's basketball season came to a close Friday afternoon as the Greyhounds fell to top-seeded and top-ranked Texas Woman's 68-49 in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournament at Kitty Magee Arena.

Eastern (20-11, 15-5 LSC) faced the Pioneers (30-1, 21-0 Lone Star) for the third time this season, falling in all three meetings to the nation's top-ranked team.

Two Greyhounds reached double figures in the contest. Aaliyah Smith paced ENMU with 11 points, connecting on three 3-pointers while adding a steal and a block in 29 minutes of action. Smith's perimeter shooting kept the Greyhounds competitive in stretches as she knocked down three shots from beyond the arc on eight attempts.

Martrice Brooks joined Smith in double digits with 10 points, shooting an efficient 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range in 26 minutes.

Chloe Dallas controlled the glass for the Greyhounds, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds while adding five points. Dallas's work on the boards helped Eastern stay within striking distance despite the shooting struggles.

Off the bench, Nataya Lockett provided a spark with eight points, three steals and four rebounds in 32 minutes. Lockett's defensive pressure and scoring punch gave the Greyhounds quality minutes in relief.

Julieta Ceja contributed five points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Toyah Montgomery added two points and two rebounds in 18 minutes.

Eastern struggled from the field, shooting 30.5 percent (18-for-59) overall and 36.8 percent (7-for-19) from 3-point range. The Greyhounds were solid from the free-throw line, converting 6-of-8 attempts (75.0 percent).

Texas Woman's shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers went 14-for-20 (70.0 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 36-15 at halftime. TWU led 51-21 heading into the fourth quarter before both teams played evenly in the final period.
