PORTALES, N.M. – For a fourth-straight week, Eastern New Mexico baseball split a weekend series. ENMU powered through two deficits and found a way to come out with a 6-4 win on a windy Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Baseball Field.
SRSU got the scoring started in the second inning via a bases loaded walk. It marked the fourth-straight game where the Lobos had started the scoring frenzy. Despite having the bases full with one out, the Hounds were able to halt the potential scare and snagged the final two outs of the frame.
Eastern answered immediately in the bottom of the inning.
Nicholas Miller put up a leadoff triple and scored two batters later as
Gaston Galvan had an RBI-single. Similar to the Lobos, ENMU also left the bases loaded in the frame with a single out.
ENMU took the lead in the fourth inning with a two-out rally.
Ryan Weaver crossed home on a base hit from
Eiji Sawamura. Eastern would not hold the lead for long as SRSU scored two runs on two hits in the fifth. The Lobos would increase their advantage to 4-2 in the seventh after three consecutive two-out hits.
The bottom of the seventh is where Eastern New Mexico would find a way to close out the game. ENMU used four singles and a walk to score four runs and push their way ahead of the upset-minded Lobos.
Sawamura had three of the Greyhounds 10 hits on the day. He managed to get on base a fourth time via a walk.
Gaston Galvan had a multi-hit outing with a pair of singles. Miller's triple ended up being the only extra base hit for the Hounds. One area where the team struggled is that they left 10 runners on base. Five of those were in the opening two innings.
Nick Mooney got the start for Eastern. He went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on four walks and three hits. He struck out three batters.
Alexander Sanderson closed out the contest going 4.1 innings. Sanderson let go six hits and two walks, but only saw one Lobo score while he was on the mound.
Eastern New Mexico now heads into a four-game series in Edmond, Okla. to face Oklahoma Christian. The first game is slated for March 27.
