Garrett Casteel comes back to Eastern New Mexico in January 2025 as an assistant coach overseeing the defensive line, special teams, and recruiting.
He spent the last two years with Southern Utah where he worked directly with the defense, specifically with the nickels.
He helped the Thunderbirds go 7-5 in 2024, including wins against UTEP (FBS) and No. 24 Central Arkansas. SUU ranked first in their conference in defensive touchdowns (3), third down defense (.494), and red zone defense (.768).
In his first season in Utah, the program finished 6-5, including four-straight to finish the season. The team ranked first in the conference in first downs allowed (210) and interceptions (14).
Casteel worked for the Greyhounds from 2020-22.
During the 2022 season with ENMU, he worked with all-LSC honorees Caden Ochoa and Beau Burns. ENMU ranked fifth in the Lone Star Conference in defensive touchdowns (2) and second in red zone defense (.731) in his final year as a graduate assistant.
In his second season with the Greyhounds, Casteel transitioned to work with linebackers and organizing summer camps. He coached All-LSC Honorable mention Beau Burns who was second on the team with 2.0 sacks and finished with 46 tackles and 7.5 for loss.
Casteel ran camps for Eastern New Mexico football throughout the southwest region. He organized several camps ran in Albuquerque, Roswell, Las Cruces, and Farmington, along with a local camp in Portales. He also helped stretch the ENMU brand with high school camps in Texas (El Paso, Midland, Abilene, Lubbock, and Amarillo).
In 2021, he oversaw the running back core. He worked with a group that averaged 140.4 yards per game and featured All-LSC Honorable mention Howard Russell.
Casteel served as the recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif. from 2018-19 after serving a season as the program's cornerback coach in 2017. He mentored corner Will Brocchini, who led the nation with 22 interceptions in just 21 games, and oversaw the program's social media efforts.
Prior to his tenure at Sierra, Casteel coached six years at the high school level in California in a variety of roles. He served as the wide receivers and defensive backs coach in 2016 at Loma High School following a three-year stint from 2012-15 as the Folsom Youth Football Offensive Coordinator.Â
Prior to his tenure as offensive coordinator at Folsom he worked for five years at Vista del Lago High School on both the football and baseball coaching staffs.Â
Casteel earned his bachelor's in sociology from California State University-Sacramento in 2015.
