Gaona did not appear in a contest as a freshman.

Before ENMU
Gaona attended Coronado High School, where he played for former Greyhound goalkeeper Alistar Caldwell.  A four year varsity player, Gaona was named the team Most Valuable Player as a senior An all-district selection at goalie, he was also selected team captain.
