Gabby Cortez enters their first season as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Eastern New Mexico University in 2021-22.

Cortez joins the Greyhounds after a successful season at Labettee Community College as an assistant coach for the Women’s Basketball program. In their role, Cortez was responsible for skill development of the student-athletes and recruiting. Cortez helped coach an NJCAA All-American, three All-Region picks, and four All-Conference selections.

Cortez was given their start in coaching at Centenary College as a Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach. Cortez main duties at Centenary were assisting the head coach to prepare for games with pre and postgame workouts. Cortez also prioritized skill development and recruiting in their role

Prior to taking the coaches bench, Cortez played professionally in Angelet, France for Angelet Cote Basque. Cortez started in 90% of contests, averaging 17 points per game (ppg) and six assists per game. In Angelet, Cortez practiced and exercised overseen by professional coaches and athletic trainers, to improve physical condition and prepare for games.

Before going professional, Cortez played at University of Louisiana at Monroe in Monroe, La. With the Warhawks, Cortez averaged 15.7 ppg and 5.4 rebounds per game (rpg) in their senior season. Cortex eclipsed the record for most 3’s in a season (70), while going 35% from the 3-point line.

Cortez started their collegiate career at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, Miss. At Southwest Mississippi, Cortez poured in 16.9 ppg and 5.8 rpg in two seasons. Cortez picked up several accolades including: MACJC 1st team All-State, MACJC All-Star, NJCAA Region 23 All-Tournament Team, and NJCAA All-Region 23 Team.

Cortez achieved an Associates of Arts in Criminal Justice from Southwest Mississippi Community College. Cortez would continue their education, earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in Criminal Justice from University of Louisiana at Monroe.
