Owen Sutherland, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., has been a graduate assistant track and field coach at Eastern New Mexico University since January 2023.
Sutherland works primarily with the sprints crew for the Greyhounds.
Several top five school record marks were hit during the 2025 outdoor season under coach Sutherland's leadership. He helped the 4x400 squad and Jamoi Jackson (400m) earn school records. He also saw Timothy Frederick (400m), Steve Taylor II (100m), and the 4x100 team earn top five marks. The men's program took fifth in the conference championships in Portales. The finish was aided by 18 points from the sprints crew and 13 points from the relay squad. He helped coach conference championships in the 400m, 4x100, and decathlon.
The women's team also posted several top five finishes in school history. Jodian Stewart (100m), Grizell Scarlett (200m), Helena Carboo-Klutsey (200m, 400m), 4x100, and 4x400 all earned top five school history times. The team also took fifth at the outdoor championship. The placing was aided by 14 points from the sprints crew and nine points from the relays.
During the 2024-25 indoor season, he helped coach first team all-american and 400m school record holder, Jamoi Jackson. He also worked with the 4x400 relay team earning the second best time in school history. The women's team during the campaign set a school record in the 4x400. He also saw Grizell Scarlett (200m) and Helena Carboo-Klutsey (400m) finish with the third best time in school history in their respective events. Sutherland helped Grizell Scarlett win the 60m indoor conference title. He also saw the 4x400 team and Jodian Stewart (60m) earn sixth at the LSC championships. The men's team saw Jackson earn fourth in the 400m and Steve Taylor II take seventh in the 60m.
In his first outdoor season with ENMU, he helped the women's team earn its best finish in conference (third) in school history. The effort was aided by 15 points from the sprints squad and six points from the 4x100 team. Sutherland worked directly with those student-athletes.
At ENMU he has helped the Greyhounds earn a sixth-place finish at the Lone Star Conference track and field indoor championships and an eighth-place nod for the men.
He has supported the coaching of Timothy Frederick who is a two-time first team all-american during the 2024 indoor season. He also helped with coaching Grizell Scarlett who earned a second team all-american nod.
Sutherland graduated from McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas in June 2023 where he ran with the sprints group.
During the 2022 season, he was a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) distance medley relay runner-up’s. In 2021, Sutherland was a member of the KCAC 4x400 conference champions.
The first-year graduate assistant holds an associate’s in kinesiology from Riverside City College where he won a junior college state championship and made the dean’s list for academic excellence.
Coach Sutherland resides in Portales, N.M. and is a 2018 graduate of Rancho Verde High School.
