LAWTON, OKLA. – Sophomore
Lauren Frye (Amissville, Va./Highland School) had a team-high 14 kills while fellow classmate
Courtney Lawson (Rio Rancho, N.M./V. Sue Cleveland HS) recorder her fourth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 15 digs Saturday afternoon. Their performances weren't enough as the Eastern New Mexico volleyball team lost in four sets 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 21-25 to Cameron in Aggie Gym.
The Zias have now lost three straight and fall to 8-10 overall and 3-6 in the Lone Star Conference while the Aggies improve to 10-8 and 3-6 in conference play.
Eastern jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first set following a kill from senior
Lindsey Barron (Mandeville, La./Central Arkansas) and service ace by Lawson. The Aggies responded with a 13-3 run that was ended on a kill by senior
Agatha Gibbons (Suva, Fiji/New Mexico Military Institute).
A quick 4-0 run ensued for the Zias to put them up 20-19. CU took four of the next five points to take a two advantage. Freshman
Brooklyn Biel (Laveen, Ariz./Betty H. Fairfax HS) and Lawson finished the set for Eastern with two kills apiece.
The momentum for the Zias carried over to set two as they won the first four points. CU fought back to tie the score 6-6. With the score tied at 9 following a kill from Gibbons, the Aggies took the next four points and seemed to have the set in hand.
ENMU came back to take a 20-19 lead on a kill by Frye. After the Aggies won two straight points, both teams traded the next five points. CU got a kill and service ace to finish off the set and tie the match 1-1.
Set number three was close through the first 20 points as the score was tied 10-10. A 5-1 burst from the Aggies put them firmly in control as they went on to win the set by six.
Eastern looked like they were going to force a decisive fifth set early in set four with a 14-11 lead. Forcing four attack errors, CU took eight of the next 12 points to go up by five.
Three kills from Frye and two by Lawson help the Zias knot the score 21-21 and forcing the Aggies to use a timeout. The final four points went to CU with ENMU gave them three of the points on two attack errors and a bad set.
Gibbons contributed with 13 kills, a .303 attack percentage and four blocks, two of them solo, while Barron added nine kills. Senior
Karra Day (Escondido, Calif./New Mexico Military Institute) posted her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career with a season-high 30 assists and 10 digs. Fellow classmate
Kennedi Catano (Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa HS) added 25 assists as well.
Eastern had a 59-52 advantage in kills but had 25 attack errors and 11 service errors.
A four-match homestand awaits the Zias that starts this week on Tuesday against rival West Texas A&M in a "Green Out" match.
