PORTALES, N.M. – For only the second time in program history, the Eastern New Mexico men's soccer team took the season series from West Texas A&M as the two teams played to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field. The only other time the Greyhounds took the season series was 2011 with a pair of 1-0 victories.
ENMU is now 5-5-3 on the season while the Buffaloes see their record go to 7-5-1.
The first chance and only good chance at a goal in the first half came late in the 6th minute when sophomore midfielder
Jose Hernandez headed the ball off a corner kick but was stopped by WT's goalkeeper, Patrick Satorie.
Eastern outshot the Buffs 9-6 in the first period and put four attempts on goal to WT's three.
In the middle of the 63rd minute, sophomore forward
John Jamison put the ball just to the outside of the left post. Five minutes later, junior midfielder
Carlos Viveros also took a shot that just missed the going inside the left goalpost.
The best chance for WT came in the 84th minute. After the Greyhounds cleared the ball out of the penalty area on a corner kick, Christian Suthers retrieved the ball and took a crack from 20 yards out. Freshman goalkeeper
James Gutierrez made the save and on the rebound attempt the Buffs were called for being offside.
Hernandez nearly scored with a little over a minute remaining in regulation. Off a cross, he headed the ball that was going to creep under the crossbar but Satorie made a leaping save to deflect the ball out of play.
Just 30 seconds into the overtime period, Christopher Hutton almost ended the game but his attempt went just right of the net.
The last chance for the Buffs came in the 105th minute when a header by Brandon Bautista off a corner kick was stopped by Gutierrez.
Sophomore defensive back
Ryan Sinclair had a crack at the net late in the 106th minute. His shot was saved by Satorie but not corralled. Hernandez's follow up attempt went high over the crossbar.
Leading the game with nine shots and four being on goal was Hernandez. His total attempts is tied for the third most in a game by a Greyhound with former players
Kal Herbert and
Andy Wilkinson as both reached the total last season against the University of the Southwest at home. Sophomore forward
Ryan McManus took five shots while midfielder and fellow classmate
John Jamison had three attempts.
Gutierrez (5-3-3) made six saves in achieving his third shutout of the season.
For WT, Axel Insulander, Bautista and Hutton all had three shots apiece. Satorie made nine saves on the afternoon.
Eastern outshot the Buffs 28-14 in the game with a 13-3 advantage during the second half.
Next up for the Hounds is a trip to nationally-ranked Midwestern State on Monday, October 27 at 4 p.m. MT. The game will be the final road contest for Eastern this season.
