WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – With less than 15 minutes to play, freshman
Isaak Arrieta scored the game-winning goal as the Eastern New Mexico men's soccer team defeat Midwestern State 2-1 Monday night at MSU Soccer Field. The victory was the first for the Greyhounds on the road against the Mustangs as they were 0-10-1 in the previous meetings in Wichita Falls.
ENMU is now over .500 for the first time this season at 6-5-3 while MSU falls to 11-3-2. The Greyhounds extended their unbeaten streak to seven games, matching the program record set last season, and also snapped the Mustangs' 14-match unbeaten streak at home.
In a game almost completely dominated by MSU, Eastern struck first with a goal in the 43rd minute. Sophomore
Jose Hernandez faked a shot with his left foot to juke out a defender. He then struck the ball in with his right for his first goal of the season. An assist went to freshman
Daniel Sanchez as his thru ball set up the score.
The Mustangs final put the ball past freshman goalkeeper
James Gutierrez in the middle of the 69th minute when Andrew Power headed in a throw-in from Paul Sunderland. The goal was Power's 12th of the season.
During the 77th minute, Hernandez sent in a cross that a diving Arrieta headed in to put the Greyhounds up 2-1. The goal was Arrieta's first of his collegiate career while Hernandez recorded his sixth assist, the fifth most in a season for an Eastern player.
MSU was held to only one shot the rest of the game that was stopped by Gutierrez with a little more than five minutes left in the game.
Arrieta led ENMU with three shots and all of them being put on goal. Senior
Abayneh Crosby was the only other Greyhounds that attempted multiple shots with two.
Gutierrez made a season-high 10 saves while two players stopped headers in the first 25 minutes to keep the game scoreless. The 10 stops is tied for the third most in a game by a Hound and the highest total since Matt Malak also had 10 saves at Midwestern State on Nov. 4, 2011.
The Mustangs outshot Eastern 25-7 and had a 13-5 advantage on shots on goal. Albert Rodriguez took a game-high eight attempts while Power had four shots, all on goal. Nick Petolick made three saves between the posts.
Next up for ENMU is a rematch with MSU on Saturday at 1 p.m. that will take place on ENMU Soccer Field.
