Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early Mustang Goal Downs Greyhounds

Saturday, November 1, 2014

PORTALES, N.M. – An early goal was the difference Saturday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field as the Eastern New Mexico men's soccer team fell 1-0 to 23rd-ranked Midwestern State. The two teams were playing the second game against each other in six days while also splitting the season series for the third time in last four years.

The Greyhounds fall to 6-6-3 this season while the Mustangs are now 13-3-2.

MSU tallied the lone score of the contest six seconds into the 11th minute. A corner kick taken by Paul Sunderland was headed into the upper right corner by Jevan Toledo. The goal was Toledo's second of the year while Sunderland was credited with his 10th assist.

Five shots were taken by Eastern in the first half but four of them were high or wide while one was blocked by a Mustang defender.

Almost four minutes into the second half, senior Jehmaine Brooks had a great opportunity to tie the game. A scrum in front of the net eventually saw the ball find Brooks' right foot but his attempt went just wide of the right post.

Brooks had another opportunity at the end of the 65th minute when a header attempt was barely knocked out of harm's way by MSU's goalkeeper Nick Petolick.

The last chance for ENMU came with 26 seconds left on the clock. Junior midfielder Carlos Viveros juked a defender in the box and took a crack at the net but went slightly wide of the left post.

Junior Alexis Medina, Brooks and Viveros all took a team-high two shots while six others had a shot attempt apiece. Freshman goalkeeper James Gutierrez made four saves on the afternoon.

For MSU, Albert Rodriguez attempted a match-best 11 shots but only put three on goal. Juan Farres was the only other Mustang that took multiple shots with three. Making three saves in the shutout was Petolick.

Eastern finishes up their season with Senior Day on Nov. 9 against Lubbock Christian at home. The game is currently scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff but would be changed if the ENMU women's soccer team earns the hosting rights to the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
