ODESSA, TEXAS – Senior
Agatha Gibbons and freshman
Brooklyn Biel combined for 22 kills in Eastern New Mexico's 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 14-25, 25-21) victory over Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Dome. Biel set season-highs in kills (10) and blocks (4) while recording her first career solo block as well. Gibbons recorded a match-high attack percentage of .625 and added two blocks.
The Zias are now 11-12 while the Patriots fall to 9-14 and have lost six straight.
With six ties and one lead chance through the first 18 points, Eastern use a 6-2 run to take control of the first set. The Zias hit .270 with 14 kills while holding DBU to 10 kills and a .073 attack percentage.
ENMU dominated the second set as they led the entire way except for two ties at 1-1 and 2-2. Gibbons was a perfect 5-for-5 attacking in the set. Both seniors
Lindsey Barron and
Bree Anna Lucero recorded three kills apiece without an error.
After falling behind 4-1, the Zias fought back to tie set three 6-6 following an attack error by the Patriots. DBU responded with an 11-3 run to easily force a fourth game.
Eastern found themselves trailing 14-9 before going on a 7-2 burst to tie the fourth set at 16-16. During the run, sophomore
Lauren Frye had two blocks and a kill.
Tied at 20, ENMU won five of the final six points to take the set and match. The Patriots helped them as they hit into four attack errors with only one being caused by a block.
Barron added nine kills and a .308 attack percentage while both sophomore
Courtney Lawson and Frye finished with seven kills apiece. Senior
Karra Day had a team-high 27 assists and fellow classmate
Kennedi Catano recorded her two double-double of the season with 19 assists and 14 digs.
A match-high 19 digs were by Lawson while freshman
Andrea Aguilar had 11 digs and two service aces.
Pacing DBU was Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick with 12 kills and a .320 attack percentage. Also reaching double-digit kills was Tiara Gipson with 10. She and Brooke Manley both had a team-best three blocks as well.
Following the second match of the day against Texas-Permian Basin, Eastern will travel to take on the University of the Southwest at 7 p.m. on Monday.
