Late Goal From Armijo Lifts Zias to Shutout Win at Midwestern State

Sunday, October 26, 2014

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS — With just 13:01 left in regulation, junior midfielder Carolyn Armijo (Mesilla Park, N.M./Las Cruces HS) tallied the only goal of Sunday's Lone Star Conference match, to lift the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (8-6; LSC 5-3) to a 1-0 victory over Midwestern State at MSU Soccer Field. The goal was her first of the season and the first game-winning goal of Armijo's career.

The win was Eastern's fourth in the series against the Mustangs and just the second time the Zias have defeated Midwestern State in Wichita Falls. The victory also moved ENMU into a tie with Texas A&M-Commerce for second place in the LSC standings.

The Mustangs held a 14-8 advantage in total shots in the contest and a 7-5 lead in shots on goal. Midwestern State also held a decisive 10-1 edge in corner kicks, but Fabienne Wilson (Sr., GK, Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS/Garden City CC) made seven saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season and improve her record to 6-3. Courtney Burnette made four saves for the Mustangs.

The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will return to action on Friday, to host Texas Woman's. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. MT.

Notes
Fabienne Wilson's four shutouts is third most for a Zia goalkeeper in a season

Wilson's six career shutouts is fourth on the Zia all-time list

Eastern's eight wins is just two from the team record (10) set in 2005 and one from tying for second (9), accomplished five times and most recently in 2009.
