PORTALES, N.M. — For the second time in as many games against Texas Woman's University,
Alyssa Prince (Sr., F, Las Cruces, N.M./Mayfield HS) tallied the game-winning goal to lift the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (9-6; LSC 6-3) to a 2-1 win in Lone Star Conference action, Friday at ENMU Soccer Field. With the victory, the Zias will play for at least a share of the conference title and the right to host the tournament, in Sunday's regular season finale.
The win moved Eastern to 7-8-1 in the series against Texas Woman's and was the first series sweep since the 2011 season. The victory also marks the sixth time Eastern has one nine games in a season and the first time since the 2009 season. Eastern's record for wins is 10, set in the 2005 season. ENMU also matched a team record with its sixth LSC win, tying the mark set in the 2011 season. Eastern also improved to 6-1 at home this season.
Eastern controlled the early portion of the first half and took the first three shots. The third shot came off the foot of
Victoria Perez (Sr., D, Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho HS) and staked the Zias to a 1-0 lead.
Renee Romero (Sr., D, Albuquerque, N.M./Volcano Vista HS) earned her third assist for the season on the goal. Less than five minutes later, Madison Purdy netted the equalizer as the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1. Eastern held an 8-6 advantage in shots over the first period, with each team having three corner kicks.
Just 14:46 in to the second half, Prince took a pass from
Melissa Moxley (Jr., D, Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho HS) and tallied her fourth game-winning goal of the season and second against the Pioneers. Eastern held a 17-10 advantage in total shots in the game and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Fabienne Wilson (Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS/Garden City CC) made two saves to improve to 7-3 on the season. Arianna Morrison made seven saves for Texas Woman's.
The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will host Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT. The contest is the final game of the regular season and the Zias will honor their senior players.
