PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (9-7; LSC 6-4) held an 11-9 advantage in shots, but dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Texas A&M-Commerce (13-5; LSC 7-3), in Lone Star Conference action, Sunday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field. The teams entered the contest with the league title and home field for the LSC tournament on the line.
The setback was just the second home loss of the season for the Zias, which closed the season with a 6-2 mark at ENMU Soccer Field. The home record highlighted a regular season which saw Eastern win five more games than last year, tie the team record for conference wins and make the LSC Tournament for the third time in team history. Prior to the game, the Zias honored their seniors, for their highly successful careers.
Eastern held a 7-4 advantage in total shots in the opening period and a 2-1 edge in shots on goal. Neither team managed to get on the board in the period and looked to the second half to settle the contest.
The only shot on goal in the second half came at the 61:22 mark, when the Lions' Jade Bell tallied her ninth goal of the season. Texas A&M-Commerce held a slim 5-4 advantage in shots in the period, although all three corner kicks went to Eastern.
Senior goalkeeper
Fabienne Wilson (Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS/Garden City CC) made two saves and registered her 12
th career game with either one or no goals allowed. Courtnie Northern made two saves for the Lions.
Tyra Gabehart (So., F, Aztec, N.M./Aztec HS) and
Morgan Fairbanks (Fr., MF, Red Oak, Texas/Red Oak HS) each had a shot on goal for ENMU.
The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will return to action on Friday, to take on Angelo State in the opening round of the LSC Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce.
