CANYON, TEXAS – Sophomore midfielder
John Jamison (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) scored late in the first half as he tallied the only goal of the game to give Eastern New Mexico a 1-0 victory over rival West Texas A&M Tuesday night at The Pitch. With the win, the Greyhounds extend their unbeaten streak to four games.
Eastern improves to 4-5-2 on the season while the Buffaloes drop to 6-4. The win was the Greyhounds third in the last four matches over WT on the road.
In the first 39 minutes of the game, the Greyhounds were held to one shot, a header by Jamison, while WT got off four shots with just one being on goal.
Jamison found the back of the net in the middle of the 40 minute when his shot appeared to be going wide but bounced off the right post and crossed the goal line. The goal was his second of the season and his first career game winner. Getting credit for an assist on the play was senior midfielder
Abayneh Crosby (Humble, Texas/Atascocita HS), who saw his four-game goal streak come to an end.
The second half saw the Buffs take eight shots but only one was placed on goal. The closest they came to scoring was late in the 73rd minute when Vitor Cardoso hit the crossbar on an attempt. Of the Greyhounds six shots in the period, four were on goal but saved.
Junior forward
Alexis Medina (Rio Rico, Ariz./Pima CC) led ENMU with three shots, placing two on net. Both freshman forward
Isaak Arrieta (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood HS) and Jamison had two attempts on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
James Gutierrez (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) made two saves and improved to 4-3-2 on the season in earning his second clean sheet of the year.
Leading WT with four shots was Cardoso while Christopher Hutton took three cracks. Patrick Satroie (4-4) made six saves on the night.
Eastern plays their fourth straight road game on Saturday when they make a trip to Dallas, Texas to take on Dallas Baptist at 12 p.m. MT.
