SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Recording a match-high 13 kills was senior
Agatha Gibbons, who has double-digit kills in five of the last six matches, but it wasn't enough for the Eastern New Mexico volleyball team as they fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-15) to Angelo State Saturday afternoon in Stephens Arena. Despite the loss, the Zias have clinched their second consecutive berth in the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
ENMU falls to 12-15 overall and 4-10 in conference play while the Rambelles improve to 18-6 and 10-5 in LSC action. Eastern remains in sixth place but are only half a match up on Cameron and one ahead of Texas A&M-Commerce for seventh and eighth, respectively.
Set one was close the entire way with the largest lead being three at 9-6 held by ASU. ENMU used a 6-2 run that was started and capped off by a kill from Gibbons to go up 21-19. The Rambelles closed the set by winning six of the final eight points with the Zias getting to kills courtesy of senior
Bree Anna Lucero.
With the score tied 6-6 in the second set, Eastern outscored ASU 5-3 to take a two point lead. The Rambelles responded with a four consecutive points that was ended on a kill by Gibbons. After an attack error by ASU tied the score at 14, the Rambelles went on a 5-0 run that propelled them to a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was knotted 3-3 on Gibbons first of seven kills in the set. ASU won 9 of the next 12 points to take a commanding lead. The closest the Zias would get the rest of the way was 18-13 following a service ace by senior
Kennedi Catano.
Sophomore
Lauren Frye had nine kills and Lucero contributed with four kills and a .308 attack percentage. Catano was credited with a team-high 19 assists while senior
Karra Day posted 14.
Defensively, Gibbons was a part of all of the team's three blocks. Freshman
Andrea Aguilar had 21 digs and sophomore
Courtney Lawson added 18 digs, one short of tying her season-high.
Eastern held the Rambelles to a .174 attack percentage but gave up five service aces and was blocked nine times.
Next up for the Zias is a trip to Las Vegas, New Mexico to face in-state rival New Mexico Highlands. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first serve and will the ENMU's final road match of the year.
