Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

ThunderWolves Too Strong for Greyhounds

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

PUEBLO, COLO. — Five Eastern New Mexico men's basketball players scored in double-figures Tuesday night but it wasn't enough as Colorado State-Pueblo came away with a 109-81 victory at Massari Arena. Junior Demetrius Balark led the Greyhounds with 18 points, 14 of which came in the first half.

ENMU suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1, while the ThunderWolves remain undefeated at 3-0.

After CSUP began the game with a jumper 30 seconds into the game, Balark hit a three-pointer to put the Greyhounds ahead 10 seconds later. The ThunderWolves responded by scoring 15 of the next 22 points for a seven-point advantage.

Eastern responded with a 10-2 run over a three minute period to go up 20-19. Junior Lawrence Domingo scored four points while junior John Gilliam capped off the run by making 1-of-2 free throws with 11:47 left in the period.

CSUP took the lead for good in the game thanks to a 12-0 run over the next 1:56.

The Greyhounds closed the first half with Balark converting an old-fashion three-point play as they went into halftime trailing 55-45.

Following a three from the ThunderWolves' Jed Knafelc put them up by 15 just 71 seconds into second half, ENMU scored seven straight to cut their deficit to eight with four of the points coming from junior Chris Wyms.

That would as close as the Greyhounds would get the rest of the game. CSUP outscored Eastern by 20 over the final 13:03 of the contest.

Wyms scored a season-high 15 points off the bench while making four three-pointers. Domingo added 13 points while senior Michael Randle and Gilliam contributed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Gilliam also led the team with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Both junior Jason Clardy and Randle grabbed six boards apiece.

Eastern shot 27-for-75 (36.0 percent) from the field and made only 6-of-28 (21.4 percent) from downtown. They did make 72.4 percent (21-for-29) of their free throw attempts. The 109 points are the most given up by the Greyhounds in a loss since falling to Central Oklahoma in the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Mar. 3, 2011 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Continue their trip to the state of Colorado, ENMU will play at Fort Lewis Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
