PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University cross country teams closed their 2014 season at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships, while the basketball teams swept Western New Mexico at The Pit. The Goeasternathletics.com Student Athletes of the Week were
John Gilliam (men's basketball),
Tori Tucker (women's basketball),
Amber Saiz (women's cross country and
Kevin Roa (men's cross country).
Tori Tucker (St., F, Portales, N.M./Floyd HS/Howard College) led the Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team to a 77-61 win over Western New Mexico, last weekend at The Pit. She registered her second 20-point performance of the season and connected on a career-high 12 free throws. She hit all eight of her free throws over the final 42 seconds of play, to seal the win.
John Gilliam (Jr., G, San Bernardino, Calif. / Upland HS / Chaffey College) averaged 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in three games for Eastern New Mexico last week. He made 14-of-29 on field goal attempts while going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc and connected on 11-of-15 shots at the free throw line. Against Western New Mexico at The Pit, Gilliam scored a season-high 25 points as he made seven-of-ten shots, five-of-six of his three-point attempts and converted all six of his free throw attempts.
Amber Saiz (Jr., Belen, N.M./Belen HS) earned NCAA Division II All-South Central region, for her 19
th-place performance at Saturday's regional championship meet. She crossed the finish line with a time of 23:40, to improve on her 36
th-place finish from the 2013 championship event.
Kevin Roa (Sr., Salinas, Calif./North Monterey County HS) paced the Greyhounds at the NCAA Division II South Central Region Championships, with a 38
th-place finish. He crossed the finish line with a time of 33:59 and moved up from his 41
st-place finish from the 2012 championships.
