Greyhounds Stung by Hornets at Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic

Friday, November 28, 2014

CANYON, TEXAS – A tough defense from Emporia State forced the Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team to shot only 30.0 percent from the field in a 74-63 defeat Friday afternoon in the First United Bank Center as part of the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic. Junior Lawrence Domingo led the Greyhounds with 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

ENMU drops to 3-3 on the year while the Hornets are now 3-2 and on a two-game winning streak.

With an exception of a 2-2 tie at the 19:04 mark following a layup by junior Jason Clardy, ESU led the entire game. The Greyhounds kept the game close through the first four and a half minutes as they trailed by two following a made free throw from junior John Gilliam.

The Hornets outscored Eastern 20-8 over an eight minute span to take their largest lead of the first half 32-18. After senior Seth Bailey nailed a three-pointer at the 5:09 mark, ENMU closed their deficit to seven but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way.

ESU took their largest advantage of the game 64-44 with 9:46 to play in the contest following a 10-0 run.

Junior Chris Wyms scored the final two baskets for the Greyhounds in the final minute. His last came with seven seconds remaining on the clock on a fastbreak layup for the last score of the game for either team.

Gilliam totaled 13 points as he went 9-for-12 at the free throw line, grabbed five rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists. Wyms also finished in double-figures with 11 points and had Eastern's only two steals in the contest.

The Greyhounds forced the Hornets into 13 turnovers but could only must six points off of them. ENMU did keep control of the ball, turning it over only five times.

Eastern returns to the court Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. MT in the First United Bank Center for their second game of the Thanksgiving Classic. They will face off with Harding out of the Great American Conference.
