PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team made sure they weren't losing to Cameron University a second time this season, knocking off the No. 4 team in the Lone Star in a dominating 3-1 perfromance Friday.
The first time the two teams met this season, the Greyhounds (8-11, 2-6 LSC) gave up a two set lead to fall to the Aggies (13-4, 4-4 LSC) in the fifth set 3-2. At the time, Cameron was 11-0 and tied for first place in the LSC. Friday, ENMU left no doubt who was the better team of the day, winning 23-25, 25-16,25-19 and 25-15.
Greyhound coach Sia Poyer said of the win, "It feels good, really good. They're a good team. We did a good job defensively and got production out of all our players."
Lauren Frye led the charge once again, with 18 kills and a .262 hitting percentage. Three other ENMU players finished with double-digit kills, including Laura Landreth, Courtney Lawson and Amanda Dietz (12, 11 and 12 kills, respectively).
Lawson also recorded her fourth double-double on the night, not only having 11 kills but finishing with a season-high 21 digs. The Greyhounds had two other players with 20 plus digs, including Andrea Aguilar with 23 and Talaitupu Faumui.
"I was happy to see production as far as kills were concerned. Just the fact we had four players in double-digits for kills, that's a big plus," said Poyer. "With Landreth, she is going to go one hundred percent all the time; on offense, you can see her energy level out there every play."
Landreth's 12 kills set a new career high for her and her team-leading .647 hitting percentage is an additional career milestone. Alexis Aguirre set a new career milestone with 55 assists, breaking her previous record of 47 set earlier in the season.
ENMU is now 7-12 all-time against the Aggies. Next up the Greyhounds will host Midwestern State University on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs are currently 5-17 overall and 0-8 in the LSC.
