PORTALES, N.M. —After a slight misstep in the first set, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team took care of business Saturday, hammering Midwestern State University in the last three sets to get a 3-1 win (22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17).
The Greyhounds (9-11, 3-6 Lone Star Conference) came out of the locker room a little sluggish to start the match, falling behind to the Mustangs (5-18, 0-9 LSC) early and were never able to regain a lead.
The second set seemed to be more of the same, with MSU taking a 8-14 lead half way through the set. The Greyhounds came roaring back though, overtaking the Mustangs at 22-22 apiece and never looking back. After a halftime adjustment, the next to sets failed to see MSU reach 20 points and the Greyhounds recorded their second straight LSC win.
Greyhound coach Sia Poyer said, "I almost expected this from the beginning. Too fight back that second set was huge and then to go on to win was really big."
Lauren Frye recorded a game-high 20 kills with a .357 hitting percentage. This is her sixth match of the year with 20 or more kills and her 17th match in double digits.
Alexis Aguirre recorded her third double-double of the year, recording 47 assists and 12 digs. Amanda Dietz was the only other Greyhound besides Frye with double-digit kills, recording 10, and Courtney Lawson's 15 digs led the team.
As a whole, the team recorded a .213 hitting percentage compared to the Mustang's .105. Errors were somewhat even, with ENMU having 22 and MSU with 27.
ENMU returns to the court Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6:00 p.m., to finish their six game home stand against in-state rival New Mexico Highlands University.
