PORTALES, N.M. — For the second time this season the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team put up a dominant performance against New Mexico Highlands University, shutting their in-state rivals out 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-22).
The Greyhounds (10-11, 3-6 Conference) made quick work of the first two sets, dominating both offensively and defensively. The third set saw the Cowgirls (6-15) put up their toughest fight of the night, but five straight points gave ENMU a lead they would never relinquish.
The only setback for the Greyhounds was a stoppage in play partway through the second set due to the arena lights going off momentarily. After a short delay, the Hounds were all business though, finishing that set along with the final one to end the match in straight sets for their third shutout of the season.
Alexis Aguirre finished with 31 assists and seven digs. No single ENMU player finished in double digits for digs or kills, with Lauren Frye, Courtney Lawson and Amanda Dietz all recording seven kills.
Brooklyn Biel had perhaps the best performance of the night, recording eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage, along with one solo block and two block assists.
Next up the team will hit the road, travelling to Commerce, Texas, to take on the Texas A&M Commerce Lions Oct. 23. The match will tip off at 4:00 p.m. (MST)
