WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS — Getting a much needed win Tuesday night, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team beat Midwestern State University 3-1 to keep their Lone Star Conference playoff hopes alive.
The Greyhounds (11-13, 4-8 LSC) already had the tie breaker over eighth place West Texas A&M, but with the win over the Mustangs (5-20, 0-11 LSC) ENMU is now only a game and a half back from Cameron University who is sitting at 4-6 in conference play.
Despite a scare from the Mustangs coming out of the gate, the Greyhounds managed to turn around a 23-25 first set loss and take the next three sets 25-12, 26-24 and 25-16. ENMU took the first meeting of the season at home 3-1 as well.
MSU did give the Greyhounds another fright in the third set, taking an early one point lead 9-10. After taking a 16-14 lead, the Mustangs once again came back and took the lead at 18-16, scoring four straight points.
The Greyhounds persisted though, finally taking a 22-20 lead and finishing the set off 26-24. Courtney Lawson recorded a double-double for the second straight game with 10 kills and 16 digs. The junior now has six double-doubles on the season and seven for her career.
Lauren Frye led ENMU on offense with 17 kills while Brooklyn Biel chipped in 13. Alexis Aguirre led the Greyhounds in assists with 49 and Andrea Aguilar and Talaitupu Faumui combined for 44 digs with 23 and 21 digs, respectively.
The Greyhounds will return home for their final three home games of the season, starting with St. Mary's University (TX) Thursday, Oct. 29, at 7:00 p.m. Following the matchup with the Rattlers, the Greyhounds will play Tarleton State University Friday and Angelo State University Saturday.
