PORTALES, N.M. — No matter what university a fan was rooting for Friday night, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team put on one of the best performances of the year, taking the Lone Star Conference's No. 1 team Tarleton State University to five sets, but ultimately losing 3-2 (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 9-15).
The Greyhounds (12-14, 4-9 LSC) were two points from taking the third set, but couldn't hang on as the TexAnns (20-5, 10-1 LSC) showed why they are the top team of the conference. The fourth and fifth sets saw TSU take early leads and while ENMU fought back valiantly, the TexAnns always seemed to have an answer.
Both teams played well defensively, but the biggest difference on the night came in blocks. TSU ended the match with 18 total team blocks while ENMU mustered 10. Brooklyn Biel led the team on defense with three solo blocks and two block assists.
Lauren Frye had 22 kills, hitting .239 on the night. Biel chipped in with 14 while Amanda Dietz added nine kills. Alexis Aguirre once again led the Greyhounds in assists, tallying 52 in the match.
The Greyhounds moved to 10-16 against the TexAnns all-time, having dropped their last three meetings. Eastern will prepare to host the No. 2 team in the LSC, preparing for Angelo State University Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (MDT).
