PORTALES, N.M. — For the first time since 2004, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team and head coach Sia Poyer defeated cross-state rival West Texas A&M University Tuesday, winning 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 17-25 and 25-20.)
The Greyhounds (7-9, 1-5 Lone Star Conference) came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a quick lead over the Lady Buffs (7-9, 1-5 LSC) and never looking back. Although ENMU had a slight hitch in the third set, they quickly regained their composure for the fourth and took a commanding 18-7 lead before finishing WT off for good.
The win over the Lady Buffs was Poyer's first as a head coach. He said, "I'm proud of us. Like I told the girls, we just had our Alumni match and most of them had never beaten WT. So it is a big deal for all of us."
The last time the Greyhounds came out on top against WT was in 2004, when the Lady Buffs lost 3-0 in Greyhound Arena. This was also the first time since that win that the Greyhounds have taken more than a single set from the regions toughest team. ENMU is now 3-25 against the Lady Buffs all-time.
Brooklyn Biel recorded 15 kills and only one error for the Hounds, finishing the night with a .560 hitting percentage. The performance was a career-night for Biel, setting a single-game high with the 15 kills.
Alexis Aguirre once again had a career night, recording 47 assists. The 47 breaks her previous record of 46 assists set against Cameron University Sept. 29 of this year.
Other top performers for ENMU were Courtney Lawson and Lauren Frye. Lawson missed her fourth double-double of the season by one kill, finishing the night with 9 kills and 18 digs. Frye had 14 kills and a .267 hitting percentage.
"Everybody played really well tonight. Lauren is always being keyed on; teams practice to stop her and she still manages nights like tonight," Poyer said. "Biel had 15 kills and only one error, a great performance from her also."
The Greyhounds will return to the court Friday for a rare double-header, taking on Newman University at 2:00 p.m. followed by Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 7:00 p.m. ENMU is just starting a six game home stretch and the double-header will be followed by three more matches at Greyhound Arena.
