Lauren Frye registered 32 kills, a .304 attack percentage and seven blocks as the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team (7-11; LSC 1-6) played a Friday doubleheader at Greyhound Arena. Newman University (16-4) won the opener in three sets (27-25, 25-19, 25-21), while Texas A&M-Kingsville (12-8; LSC 3-4) won the nightcap in four sets (16-25, 22-25, 25-16, 17-25).
The Javelinas charged to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap, but Eastern exploded in the third set to take an 11-3 lead. Texas A&M-Kingsville pulled to within two points, 16-14, but a pair Frye kills sandwiched around a TAMUK error ignited the Hounds. Eastern out hit the Javelinas .257-.097 in the third set and was paced defensively by five digs from
Andrea Aguilar.
The decisive fourth set saw the teams trade points early on, until Texas A&M-Kingsville snapped a 9-all tie with five of the next six points. ENMU used both timeouts at that point, but was unable to retake the momentum as the Javelinas pulled away for the win.
For the match, Texas A&M-Kingsville held a .301-.160 edge in attack percentage and a 9-7 lead in blocks. Frye had 19 kills, a .325 attack percentage and five blocks, while
Courtney Lawson added six kills and 10 digs. Aguilar finished with 13 digs and four service aces. Valarie Moehrig paced TAMUK with17 kills.
Eastern and Newman went back and forth in the opening set as the lead changed hands eight times and the score was tied on 10 occasions. The Jets called timeout after block from Frye and
Amanda Dietz tied the set at 24-all. Another block by Frye staked the Hounds to a 25-24 lead. The Jets scored the next three points and took first set on a Kayla Turner service ace.
Eastern controlled the early going of the second set and seized a 16-10 lead. Ashley Gonzalez's six kills in the set helped the Jets overcome the deficit and take a 2-0 lead into intermission. Aguilar registered an incredible nine digs in the second set.
The final set went back and forth, with the final tie score coming at 19-all. Newman scored three of the next four points to hold on for the win.
The Jets held a .224-.132 edge in attack percentage for the match. Frye finished with 13 kills, while Dietz contributed 11. Aguilar and Lawson chipped in 19 and 14 digs, respectively. Lawson also served up three aces, while Alexia Aguirre had 35 assists.
The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team will return to action next Friday, to take on Cameron University. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. MT.
