KINGSVILLE, TEXAS — In their final regular season conference game of the season, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team couldn't hang on, falling to Texas A&M University-Kingsville Friday in four sets, 24-26, 25-21, 17-25, 23-25.
Lauren Frye continued her record-setting season, leading the Greyhounds (13-19, 4-12 Lone Star Conference) with 22 kills. Courtney Lawson and Brooklyn Biel combined for 21 kills on the night, recording 10 and 11 kills, respectively.
Alexis Aguirre had 48 assists for ENMU while Andrea Aguilar had a team-high 15 digs. Aguilar also chipped in with nine digs.
Despite having a solid performance on both sides of the net, Eastern could capitalize at the right moments. As a team they hit .220 compared to Kingsville's (19-13, 8-7 LSC) .250 hitting percentage. ENMU also had nine team blocks, compared to the Javelinas 10.
The first and fourth sets had 16 total tied scores, while the first set saw three lead changed and the fourth saw two in what turned out to be an incredibly close match.
Kingsville's win more or less cemented their seed for the LSC Tournament, giving them a lone fourth place finish. The Greyhounds fate is slightly more uncertain, with the Hounds trailing West Texas A&M University by one game.
Fortunately for ENMU, the Lady Buffs will head into Kingsville Saturday for their last matchup of the season against the Javelinas. The two teams will have an afternoon matchup, with the contest starting at 2:00 p.m. (CT). After the conclusion of the match the Greyhounds will know where they will stand in the LSC rankings heading into the post season.
