SAN ANGELO. TEXAS — Close matchups have defined the rivalry between the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (4-14-1) and Texas Woman's since the first meeting in 2003. Today's Lone Star Conference tournament contest between the teams followed that tradition, as the Pioneers (11-6-2) edged Eastern by a 1-0 score at ASU Soccer Field.
The teams have met 19 times with 15 of those game being decided by a single goal. Including today's contest, the last six meetings have had a one-goal margin. The contest prior to that run was a 2-2 tie on September 29, 2013.
The Greyhounds withstood an early flurry from Texas Woman's, with
Karissa Stinson making four saves over the first 21:45. At the 21:52 mark, Ashley Bishop bounced a shot off the far post of Eastern's goal, to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Just a few minutes later, the Greyhounds had a few opportunities.
Melissa Moxley had a corner kick and a shot, sandwiched around a shot from
Jenna Sievers. Texas Woman's retained its lead at intermission and held a 12-4 lead in total shots, although the Hounds enjoyed a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Early in the second half, Moxley fired a shot on the TWU goal, which was saved by Ariana Morrison. Eastern's final opportunity came on a shot by
Tori Hendrickson with 4:11 left, but Morrison made the save.
Hendrickson paced ENMU with two shots on goal, while Moxley and Sievers had one each. The Pioneers finished with a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Stinson made eight saves in net for the Greyhounds, while Morrison had four for the Pioneers.
