WICHITA, KAN. — In one of the closest matches of the season, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team fell to Newman University Saturday, losing in the fifth and final set, 3-2 (25-18, 26-24, 18-25, 15-25 and 16-18).
Coming out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, the Greyhounds (13-18) took the first two sets from regional power Newman University (23-8). The second saw a neck-and-neck contest the entirety of the set, with neither team leading by more than four points throughout.
After five lead changes and an amazing 14 ties, the Greyhounds Laura Landreth and Courtney Lawson got back-to-back kills to finish off the set and head into the locker room up 2-0. Nothing was decided quite yet, as the Jets would come out with a renewed vigor to take the following two sets and tie the match at 2-2.
The fifth set followed suite of the second, with both teams playing back and forth and neither team leading by more than three points the whole set. The Greyhounds took a 7-4 lead partway through the set, until Newman tied it all up at 15-15.
Fate would fall on the Jets side of the net this go around however. With the match tied at 16-16, a kill and attack error would push Newman on top, winning the set 18-16 and the match 3-2.
Lauren Frye once again led the Hounds with 17 kills, closely followed by Courtney Lawson with 16 in addition to her 11 digs. The double-double is the junior's seventh of the season, the most of any ENMU player in a single season since 2001.
Alexis Aguirre also recorded a double-double, recording 50 assists and 13 digs for her sixth of the season. Brooklyn Biel had a good showing as well, recording 12 kills, three digs and three blocks.
ENMU will travel to Kingsville, Texas, for their final Lone Star Conference regular season match of the year. The Hounds are currently 4-11 in the LSC, sitting in seventh place tied with West Texas A&M University. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m. (MT), Friday, Nov. 13.
