WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS — For the second time this season the Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team gave the No. 2 team in the nation one of their toughest matches. Then, for the second time this season, one of the nation's best would pull out the win in the end, with No. 2 Midwestern State University walking away with a 4-2 win.
The first time the two teams met MSU (16-0-1) was ranked No. 1 and the Hounds (6-8-2) managed to keep them scoreless through 90 minutes of play. A goal minutes into overtime would give the Mustangs the win, although ENMU did an incredible job against the nation's best.
The Greyhounds fell behind early in Sunday's match, allowing two goals in the first 20 minutes against the dangerous Mustangs attack. Alexis Medina brought ENMU back within one just before the half, scoring off an assist from Carlos Viveros. The score was Medina's second of the season.
Following halftime, the Mustangs would strike again in the 52nd minute, pushing their lead to 3-1. Viveros, a fifth-year senior playing in his last match in an Eastern jersey, wouldn't give up though, scoring off a Ryan Sinclair cross from the right side of the field and bringing MSU back within reach.
The upset wouldn't happen today however, as the Mustangs sealed the deal with their fourth goal of the match in the 76th minute of play.
The Hounds made the most of their chances, scoring two goals on three shots on goal. Viveros and Medina, also a senior playing in his last match, combined for six shots and all three shots on goal.
James Gutierrez was under duress all match, with the high scoring Mustangs taking 23 total shots on the day with 12 of them on target. Gutierrez held his own though, recording seven saves.
