PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University basketball teams head to Allen, Texas, this week for the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship, where the women's team received a No. 7 seed and the men's team a No. 8 seed.
ZIASThe Zias (9-17, 5-11 LSC) will face off with No. 2 seed Midwestern State University (21-5, 12-4) Wednesday, March 4 at 11:00 p.m. MST. The Zias lost both matchups with the Mustangs this year, with the latest coming Feb. 14 in Wichita Falls, Texas, where the Zias fell 94-46.
The Zias are led by
Sarah Stinnett (Jr., Fort Sumner, N.M. / Howard College) and
Tori Tucker (Sr., Portales, N.M. / Floyd HS / Howard College) who average 14.1 and 13.4 points a game. Tucker is also second on the team in rebounds, averaging 6 a game. The Zias are shooting 39 percent from the floor and 32 percent from behind the three point arc.
If the Zias defeat Midwestern State, they will play the winner of the contest between No. 3 seed Cameron and No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce
GREYHOUNDS The Greyhounds (7-20, 0-14 LSC) will play against No. 1 seed Tarleton State University (26-2, 12-2 LSC) who is also holds the No. 1 in the South Central Region. The Greyhounds dropped both meetings with Tarleton this year, with the latest coming Feb. 21 in Stephenville, Texas, where they fell 65-55.
The Greyhounds will look to their season leading scorer
John Gilliam (Jr., San Bernardino, Calif. / Upland HS / Chaffey College) who is averaging 16.4 points a game and leads the team with 5.4 rebounds a game as well.
Chris Wyms (Jr., Carson City, Calif. / King Drew Medical Magnet HS / Cerritos HS) and
Lawrence Domingo (Jr., Union City, Calif. / Community Charter Early College HS / Stoneridge Prep) are averaging 12.5 and 11.1 points a game respectively, with Wyms leading the team with 68 assists.
If the Greyhounds defeat Tarleton State, they will play the winner of No. 4 seed Texas A&M Commerce and No. 5 seed West Texas A&M.
