LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Greyhound volleyball team took care of business Tuesday, handing New Mexico Highlands University a loss in straight sets (25-21, 25-18 and 25-23). Eastern New Mexico University moved to 5-4 on the season after the win and 5-6 against the Cowboys since 2010.
Head coach
Sia Poyer said, "Winning on the road is always hard and it's a plus to get a win, especially against our in-state rivals. The win is a nice little confidence booster heading into conference play."
Lauren Frye continued to dominate on the offensive side, recording 14 kills with a .545 hitting percentage, her highest percentage of the season for a single game.
Andrea Aguilar and
Desiray Anderson combined for 20 digs and 36 serving receptions (Aguilar 17 and 17, Anderson 3 and 19).
"The big thing was blocks and it made a huge difference tonight," said Poyer. The Greyhounds had 11 total team blocks on the night, led by
Laura Landreth who had one solo block and six block assists to go along with four kills and three assists.
Along with a staunch defense, Poyer pointed out while his veterans did their job, some less experienced and younger players really stepped up for ENMU in the road win. "Our younger players were huge tonight.
Amanda Dietz really shined, playing outside where she really hasn't played at in years," said Poyer. Dietz finished with seven kills and three block assists.
ENMU returns home to face off against Texas Woman's University in their home opener Friday night. The match also marks the start of conference play for the Greyhounds in the Lone Star Conference. Texas Woman's is 6-2 heading into the match, coming off a 3-0 win over Adams State University.
