20th-Ranked Lions Edge Gridiron Hounds

Saturday, September 26, 2015

COMMERCE, TEXAS — The Eastern New Mexico University football team (2-2; LSC 0-2) traded the lead a number of times with 20th-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce (3-1; LSC 2-0) in Saturday night's game at Memorial Stadium. The Lions capitalized on a pair of turnovers held on for a 42-31 win over the Greyhounds. The contest featured three tie scores and five lead changes.

Despite the setback, Eastern still leads the overall series with A&M-Commerce, 15-14, the Lions hold an 11-4 home record against Eastern.

The Greyhounds took the opening kickoff and went 65 yards on 10 plays to seize the lead on a four-yard run from Jeremy Doucette. Texas A&M-Commerce immediately answered for the tying touchdown and converted a Greyhound fumble with a two-yard Richard Cooper run for a 14-7 lead. The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the first quarter, with the Lions holding a 21-14 lead.

As the second quarter started, ENMU capped a drive with Doucette's second touchdown run of the game, this time, a three-yard run to knot the score at 21-all. The Greyhound defense thwarted a fourth-and-five attempt at their own 35-yard line, which set up a 21-yard go-ahead field goal from Timothy Callian with 7:31 remaining in the half. After forcing a pair of Lion punts, it appeared that the Hounds would take the lead into the locker room, but a muffed punt set the Lions up at the ENMU 32-yard line. Cooper capped the drive by grabbing a tipped flare pass and scoring from five-yards out, for a 28-24 halftime lead.

The third quarter proved to be a defensive struggle, but Eastern broke through with a 15-play, 80-yard drive which spanned 7:18 of play. The drive was capped by Jeremy Buurma's five-yard pass to Adrian Horton, which staked the Hounds to a 31-28 lead. Harrison Stewart tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to give the Lions the lead for good, and Cooper added a six-yard scoring run for insurance.

The Greyhounds outgained A&M-Commerce 550-547 in total offense, which included a 293-267 edge in passing yards. Eastern also ran 87 plays from scrimmage, while the Lions had 55. Buurma completed 17 of his 23 pass attempts for 228 yards and a touchdown. Horton also completed a 65-yard touchdown pass to Kamal Cass, in addition to hauling in a career-high eight receptions for 95 yards. Aaron Johnson grabbed a career-best six catches for 116 yards. Jeremy Doucette rushed for a career-high 97 yards and two scores, while Cass finished with 70 rushing yards and 72 receiving yards. Fe'ao Vunipola had six tackles with half of a sack.

Cooper rushed for 153 yards, while Theo Wofford added 133 yards on the ground. Lace Evans paced the Lions with 112 yards receiving.

Next Saturday, the Eastern New Mexico University football team will host Texas A&M-Kingsville for the Homecoming/Hall of Honors Game. The contest will kick off at 3 p.m. MT, and is sponsored by Sievers Sports Medicine.
