LAWTON, OKLA. — Courtney Lawson and Alexis Aguirre put on great performances Tuesday, helping the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team jump out to an early 2-0 before losing the last three sets to a still unbeaten Cameron University.
The Greyhounds (6-9, 0-5 Lone Star Conference) won the first two sets by a slim margin, 25-22 and 25-22, before the Aggies (12-0, 3-0 LSC) really got things going, recording a hitting percentage above .330 in the last three sets.
Cameron is tied for first place in the LSC with another recent Greyhound opponent, Angelo State University (15-3, 4-0 LSC). ENMU is now 6-12 all-time against the Aggies.
Aguirre had arguably her best outing of the season thus far, recording a career-high 46 assists and 20 digs. This was her second double-double of the season.
Lawson recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs in the match. Lawson and Aguirre are the only players for the Hounds to have recorded any double-doubles this season.
Lauren Frye once again led the team on offense, recording 21 kills. This was her fifth match of the season with 20 or more kills and her 12th match having double digits. She leads the team with 224 kills on the season.
Errors played a key role in the loss, with ENMU recording 36 and Cameron sitting at only 16. Digs, kills, assists and attacks were more or less even across the board. Both teams had over ten total blocks with the Greyhounds recording 10 and the Aggies 11.
The team will now return to Portales to kick off their seven game home stretch, starting with the ENMU Alumni match Friday, Oct. 2, at 6:00 p.m. Following the exhibition, the Greyhounds will host cross-state rivals West Texas A&M University (5-8, 1-4 LSC) Oct. 6, at 6:00 p.m.
