STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS— Despite a final score of 89-71 in their loss to No. 10 Tarleton State Wednesday, the Eastern New Mexico men's basketball may have played some of their best basketball on the season and had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.
The Greyhounds (4-13, 0-5 LSC) played incredibly well against one of the Lone Star Conference's best, hanging with the Texans (14-3, 4-1 LSC) for most of the game. Early foul trouble and turnovers hurt ENMU and created something of an insurmountable deficit despite how well the Greyhounds continued to play.
Javaan Mumtaz had more or less a mirror image of his career game against Angelo State this previous Saturday, scoring 20 points on 7-12 shooting and 4-8 3-pointers. Lawrence Domingo and Ladarius Stewart both poured in 15 points while Brady Patterson added 10 points. Domingo added nine rebounds, falling one short his fifth double-double of the season.
While Eastern finished with only 16 turnovers (compared to the Texans 13), it was the fact Tarleton scored 21 points off the aforementioned giveaways that made the difference. Across the board stats were basically even, Tarleton grabbing 34 rebounds to Eastern's 33 as a prime example.
Eastern shot well on the night, hitting 48 percent of their shots from the floor and going 37 percent from beyond the arc. Tarleton was a little better, going 33-55 from the field for 60 percent on the night.
Eastern will hopefully take their momentum from this game into their matchup with Texas A&M-Commerce this upcoming Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (MT) at home in Portales, N.M.
