PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team battled sixth-ranked St. Edward's to a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon in two overtime periods at the ENMU Soccer Field. The Greyhounds handed the Hilltoppers just their second blemish on the season and move to 5-5-4 overall and 3-4-3 in Heartland Conference action.
Â
"This was a huge game for us," ENMU Head Coach
Paul Tate said. "To be able to hang with them through the final 40-minutes of action despite being down a man was very impressive. I'm proud of this team and the way they competed. I thought
Ryan Flores did a great job of coming in off the bench and making a big save on a PK late."
Â
Eastern's
James Gutierrez started in goal for the 'Hounds and made three saves, but was ejected in the 70
th-minute of action on a red card. Flores came in and pitched a shutout in the final 40-minutes of the match, making seven saves along the way to help the Green and Silver earn a point in Heartland Conference play.
Â
In the 86
th-minute, Flores blocked Jack Blanton's penalty kick to preserve the scoreless tie. The freshman from El Paso would go on to make a pair of saves in each of the overtime periods to keep the Hilltoppers off the scoreboard.
Â
Ryan McManus led the offensive effort for the Greyhounds with a pair of shots, including one on goal in the first overtime period while
Nicolai Alstrom also tallied a shot on goal in the match.
Â
The Greyhounds return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 20, against UTPB. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. in Odessa, Texas. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
