Greyhounds Battle Newman to 1-1 Draw

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team tied with Newman University, 1-1, on Thursday evening at Al Whitehead Field at Greyhound Stadium in Portales. The Greyhounds withstood 15 shots by the Jets to move to 4-5-2 on the year and 2-4-1 in Heartland Conference action.

Redshirt junior James Gutierrez made seven saves in goal for Eastern while the defense did not surrender a shot on goal in either of the 10-minute overtime periods. The Greyhounds manufactured five shots on the night, with Robert Raspudic recording the lone goal for the Green and Silver.

In the 48th-minute, Raspudic drilled a shot from 42 yards out over the outstretched glove of Jets' keeper, Blake Andrews to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 advantage early in the second half. Despite limiting Newman's opportunities, the Jets pushed in the equalizer late in the match. On one of their 11 corner kicks on the night, the Jets' Marian Saar took the ball off the deflection to beat Gutierrez and tie the match at one in the 83rd-minute while the Greyhounds were a man down due to a red card.

Omary Shabani paced the offense for Eastern, firing three shots in 96 minutes in the draw.

The Greyhounds return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 8, against Rogers State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Al Whitehead Field at Greyhound Stadium in Portales. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
