Women's Basketball to Face Flying Queens and Cowgirls Before Opening Conference Play

PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team will return to action in a couple days to visit Wayland Baptist University, and host New Mexico Highlands early next week. The Greyhounds enter the upcoming contests with a 1-1 record after a strong showing at the ENMU Women's Regional Challenge.

The legendary "Voice of the Greyhounds" Dr. Don Elder will be on hand Friday evening, to broadcast the contest at Wayland Baptist on KSEL 105.9. The Greyhounds have won their last two season openers and find themselves with a 1-1 record after splitting two games in the ENMU Women's Regional Challenge. Despite facing a six-point deficit on a number of occasions, the Hounds rallied for an overtime 69-66 win over South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. In the second game, Fort Lewis rallied for a 73-69 win over ENMU. FLC received votes in the latest South Central Region media poll.

Johna McClelland leads the Greyhounds in scoring with 13.5 points per game. She also averages 4.5 rebounds per contest and boasts a .579 shooting percentage. Kassandra Harris pours in 12 points and averages nine rebounds per game. She notched the team's first double double of the season against South Dakota Mines. Mikaehla Connor and Dasia Johnson have dished out 10 and eight assists, respectively, while Daeshi McCants is shooting a team-high .714 from the field.

Josh Prock is in his fourth season as head coach of the Greyhounds and has a 26-56 record at ENMU. On Friday, he matched Jo Wood for the fourth-most wins in program history, and is just one away from tying Bernie Barras for third.

In the Series with Wayland Baptist
The Flying Queens have an 8-1 record against Eastern and are on a four-game win streak in the series. Eastern's last win against Wayland Baptist came on December 30, 1999. Ginger Armacost made a number of key plays down the stretch, which helped Eastern push a six-point lead to 13 points, on the way to a 78-70 victory at Greyhound Arena. Friday will mark the fourth road game in the series for Eastern.

Wayland Baptist is 2-o on the season, with victories over University of the Southwest and Northern New Mexico. Last Saturday, WBU dropped an exhibition contest at West Texas A&M. Maci Merket leads the Flying Queens with 15 points per game, while Jade Jones had the team's first double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds against Northern New Mexico.

Last season, WBU posted a 25-5 record with a 17-1 mark in Sooner Athletic Conference play. WBU defeated Oklahoma City University in the SAC tournament championship, before falling the Pikeville in the NAIA playoffs. Last season, WBU posted a 2-1 record against the Lone Star Conference, with wins over Eastern and Angelo State.

Alesha Robertson-Ellis is in her third season as head coach at WBU and has a record of 47-17.

In the Series with New Mexico Highlands
Eastern is 35-8 against New Mexico Highlands, with a 21-1 mark in home games against the Cowgirls. ENMU has won three of the last four overall meetings. NMHU edged Eastern 89-85 on November 16, 2009, for their first road win in the series.

A basket from Shiana Ratliff with just two seconds left allowed the Cowgirls to post their first win of the season, 63-62, over Oklahoma Panhandle. The victory evened NMHU's record at 1-1, after a season-opening loss to Rogers State. Kaylani Maiava leads the Cowgirls with 13.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while Brianna Pribble averages 11.5 points per game.

Last season, New Mexico Highlands posted a 4-23 record, with a 2-20 mark in the RMAC's Mountain Division. The Cowgirls posted two wins over Adams State, in addition to victories over OPSU and University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

Joseph Anders is the interim head coach at New Mexico Highlands.

The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team will open the month of December with a two-game road trip, which will mark the start of LSC play. On Thursday, December 1, Eastern will visit University of Texas of the Permian Basin, followed by a contest at West Texas A&M.
