SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico University basketball team lost on a buzzer-beating shot to Howard Payne, 66-65 on Saturday evening at the Junell Center in San Angelo, Texas. The loss moves the Greyhounds to 1-3 on the season.
Eastern shot over 43 percent in the first half and took a two point lead into the locker room at the break, thanks in large part to guard
Marquise Harris going 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-5 from three, good for a half-high 13 points.
Chris Wyms stymied the Yellow Jackets' backcourt in the opening period, with three steals in 11 minutes of action.
Andre Hughes pulled down five boards and the Greyhounds reigned in seven offensive boards, good for seven second-chance points.
Despite a 19-3 to open up the second half, Howard Payne continued to hang in the game. The Greyhounds forced eight turnovers by the Yellow Jackets in the first eight minutes of the second half, helping ENMU build a 17 point lead. However, Howard Payne manufactured a 30-11 run of its own to build a 64-62 lead with 1:30 to go.
Following a timeout, Eastern's
Shawn Shelton missed a jumper, but battled for the offensive rebound. In the process of going up for the ball, Shelton was fouled, sending the 6-7 junior to the charity stripe. The Bloomfield, Ct., native made the first, but missed the second. Howard Payne ran out the shot clock on the ensuing possession giving the 'Hounds the ball down one with 45 seconds to play.
Marquise Harris drove baseline and kissed it in off the glass giving Eastern a 65-64 lead before a timeout by HPU. After the stoppage, Isaiah Herrera inbounded the ball and received the pass and gave a shot fake, forcing
Byrale Carter into the air. After taking a sidestep, the Yellow Jackets' guard hit a deep game winning two with under a second to play, giving Howard Payne a 66-65 victory.
The Greyhounds continue the Angelo State Tournament tomorrow with a matchup with Huston-Tillotson College. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. at the Junell Center in San Angelo. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics and @ENMU_Hoops on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
