PORALES, N.M. –The Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak with an 80-70 win over Texas Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena. Seven different players tallied at least five points to help the Greyhounds improve their record to 5-8 on the season.
Â
"I was really proud of our guys to bounce back," ENMU Head Coach
Tres Segler said. "We shot it well down the stretch and held their leading scorer to just two points in the second half. We did a good job as a team to corral him.
Shawn Shelton had some big shots for us. It wasn't a huge scoring game from Shawn, but the buckets he gave us were all huge. The bench explodes when he scores because all those guys want him to do well. I'm definitely proud to get him going again."
Â
The Greyhounds were led offensively by junior guard
Lamarquis Thompson with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The Houston, Texas, native also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Junior forward
Chris Lewis finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while junior guard
Marquise Harris scored at least 10 points for the 11
th-time this season. The Eastern bench helped spark the team to victory, outscoring the Rams 42-22, led by Thompson's 20.
Â
"I was really proud of the bench; my bench came up big and played well," Segler added. "Some of those guys that weren't getting as many minutes came up solid for us."
Â
Eastern opened the contest with a 42-point first half to take a 42-39 lead into the locker room, shooting 52% from the field and 46% from beyond the arc. The Greyhounds used a balance offensive attack in the first period with eight different players scoring and four recording at least five points in
Joe Clarke,
Chris Wyms, Harris and Thompson.
Â
"Lamarquis did it so quietly tonight, I didn't even know he had 20 and eight," Segler said on Thompson's performance. "When we recruited him, we knew that he had the ability to do that after averaging 17 and nine on the west coast. We knew he had that explosiveness in him. I'm just so glad that he's having this kind of success so early. He's one of the hardest workers on our team so he deserves everything he gets."
Â
In the second half, the Greyhounds stymied the Rams' offensive attack, allowing just 31 points to clinch the victory. Thompson went 4-of-6 from the field while Lewis added seven points and seven rebounds.
Â
"To win in the Lone Star Conference, you have to have depth," Segler said. "More than just depth, I wanted to add guys who can do different things. You have Lamarquis who can shoot it and drive it,
CoRnell Neal was much more of a driver before, but has worked hard and has been shooting the three ball really well for us;
Chris Lewis can pass better than anybody in the forward position;
Javaan Mumtaz has given us a lot of really good minutes at the forward spot and you have to respect him as a shooting threat."
Â
The Greyhounds travel to Las Cruces on Dec. 27 for an exhibition contest with New Mexico State. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. against the Aggies. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics and @ENMU_Hoops on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
