CANYON, TEXAS —
Simone Laurenz turned in a strong performance at the plate on Saturday morning as the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (2-2) took on Fort Lewis College (3-5) in the WT Invitational. The sophomore catcher batted two-for-three with a double, but the Hounds dropped an 8-3 decision at Buffalo Sports Park #2.
Laurenz,
Susannah Chandler, and
Audrey Velasquez have hit safely in all four games this season, while
Kyra Sirag has registered a base hit in each of the last three.
Velasquez drew a walk to lead off the game and stole second, before scoring on a two-out error. The Sky Hawks pulled even in the bottom of the first inning, but Velasquez struck again in the top of the third to give ENMU a 2-1 lead with a leadoff homer.
Fort Lewis took the lead back for good in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run homer from Angelique Elemen. Elemen drove in an insurance run with a single in the fifth frame to stake FLC to a 4-2 advantage.
Chandler led off the Greyhound sixth with a triple and sprinted home on a one-out single from Laurenz. Eastern trailed by a single run entering the bottom of the sixth, but Fort Lewis sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs to provide the final margin.
The Eastern New Mexico University softball team will continue play at the WT Invitational this afternoon, with a contest against Adams State. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MT.
