PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — With one swing of the bat the Eastern New Mexico baseball team found themselves up by three runs early and would only continue to add to that lead as they would go on to beat Selma College 19-4 Sunday, in the final game of their three-day Georgia trip.
The win for the Greyhounds (5-1) completed the sweep of their trip, knocking off Selma after handily defeating both Lane and Clark Atlanta. The Hounds are off to their best start since 2014, when they opened up the season 6-1.
Daniel Ward continued his offensive dominance from the plate, following his record-tying three homerun performance from Saturday, with another home run in the contest against Selma, which drove in three runs. Ward finished the day going 2-of-4 from the plate, with three RBIs and a double to go along with the homer.
ENMU's pitching staff continued to work the mound like a veteran crew, despite all stepping pitching for the Hounds for the first time. J'Daylin Jackson was credited with the win, pitching three innings while only allowing two hits and one run. He also struck out a game-high four batters.
In relief, Chris Miranda-Carr and Scott Klein combined for two strikeouts in 4 innings from the mound. Klein threw 1.1 hitless innings on the day.
Four Eastern batters finished the afternoon with three RBIs, with Mike McNicholl, Tregra Williams, Jacob Cluff and Ward all driving in three scores. McNicholl finished the day perfect from the plate, recording four hits in four at bats and scoring three runs himself. Alex Rojas scored a run as well as driving in a score on his first career triple.
The Hounds also finished the day with no errors, recording a spotless 1.000 fielding percentage. On the season ENMU has only recorded six errors compared to their opponents 18- a good sign of things to come defensively.
ENMU is now batting .363 on the season, leading the Lone Star Conference in batting average. Ward is second in the conference, hitting an even .500 through six games. He also has two more homeruns (4) than the next closest player.
The team will return home for two days of rest before taking off to the opposite coast, heading to San Diego, Calif., to take on Point Loma in a three game series. The first game is slated for 3 p.m. (MT) Thursday, Feb. 18.
