PHOENIX, Ariz. — Despite an early two run lead, the Eastern New Mexico Baseball team couldn't hang on for the win, giving up six late runs against Arizona Christian Monday to lose 13-7.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, the Greyhounds (5-6) recorded a four hit, four run inning to jump out 4-1. A run by the Firestorm (4-7) would cut ENMU's lead to only two scores in the following half inning.
The Hounds would put up three more runs over the next four innings, but couldn't manage to stop a rampaging ACU team who would score two runs in the third, followed by three more three run innings in the fourth, sixth and seventh.
ENMU went deep into their bullpen during the contest, throwing a different pitcher in each of their eight innings from the mound. Nick DeArmond and Keenan Dodd each threw to shutout innings, striking out one batter a piece.
Offensively, Daniel Ward and Jacob Cluff each recorded three, but no RBIs. They were the only Greyhounds with multiple hits in the matchup with ACU. Dylan Nault kept his hitting streak alive with his one hit on the day, recording hits in nine consecutive games.
"We learned a lot about our team this weekend," said assistant coach Brett Merritt. "We need to get back to it this week at practice and really focus on fundamentals and execution."
The Hounds will return home to prepare for Adams State this coming weekend. ENMU will Host the Grizzlies in a doubleheader Saturday followed by a single outing on Sunday, Feb. 27-28. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (MT).
