Despite Seven Runs, Hounds Fall to OPSU

Eastern New Mexico Baseball | 02.07.16 | David Norton, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

GOODWELL, OKLA. — Despite two homeruns and scoring seven total, the Eastern New Mexico baseball team was still outgunned Sunday in their 11-7 loss to Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

Justin Paul led the Greyhounds (2-1) from the plate, hitting .600 in the contest while driving in a team-high three RBIs off one homerun and a triple for a 1.400 slugging percentage.  Tregra Williams hit his first career home run, driving in two runs with one swing of the bat.

Eastern jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but a rocky start from Daniel Ward on mound saw OPSU (1-2) score seven runs over the next two innings.  The starter struggled to find the strike zone, racking up eight walks while only allowing one hit.

Despite relief pitching, the Aggies would score runs in the third and fourth innings, followed by their final score of two runs in the bottom of the eighth as insurance.  ENMU would make a try at the comeback, scoring two of their own in the seventh inning, but too little too late.

Keenan Dodd threw for two innings, allowing only one earned run off three hits while striking out two batters.  Anthony Inge was the only pitcher unscathed in the affair, throwing for one inning while giving up no runs and blanking two batters.

The Greyhounds will return home before taking their longest trip of the season, travelling to Atlanta, Ga.  Their first matchup will be Feb. 12 against Clark Atlanta, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. (MT).
