Greyhound Baseball Drops Series Opener to West Texas

CANYON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico baseball team ran into early trouble Friday against out-of-state rivals West Texas A&M, falling behind early and ultimately losing 15-5.

The Buffs (30-15, 18-12 LSC) got off to incredibly hot start, scoring seven runs in the first inning followed by four more in the second, jumping out to a double digit lead that would only continue to grow.  The Greyhounds (10-35, 3-27 LSC) could never get much going from the plate, scoring their five runs staggered over four innings towards the end of the contest.

Zach Shank recorded two hits, the only Hound with multiple hits, while Jacob Cluff recorded two RBIs off a double to right-center field in the seventh inning.  West Texas outhit Eastern 18-8 over the course of the matchup.

Alec Lemmon was given the start for the Hounds, but after seven runs and six hits, was relieved by Chris Miranda-Carr for the remainder of the inning.  Lemmon did get the first two outs of the inning but couldn't manage the third before he was pulled for Miranda-Carr.

Enrique Perez would take the mound starting the second inning, but quickly found himself in trouble as the Buffs continued their offensive onslaught, finishing with four innings of work and 11 hits allowed.  Kiegan Basso would pitch the final inning, allowing only one run in the seventh and final inning.

The Greyhounds will conclude their season series against the Buffs Saturday, with the first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. (MT).  Following the West Texas series, ENMU will head to Portales to prepare for their season finale against Cameron University starting May 6th.
