PORTALES, N.M. — Despite Kiegan Basso setting a new career mark with eight strikeouts in the Eastern New Mexico baseball team's matchup with Cameron University on Friday, the team would end the night losing 10-2 to the team from Oklahoma.
The Greyhounds (10-38, 3-30 LSC) gave up one run in the first inning and six in the second before pulling their starter for Basso. Basso would go through another rough patch in the top of the third, allowing three hits combined with a defensive error to allow two runs across.
Down 9-0 heading into the fourth, the big right-hander would go on a tear, striking out the next five batters he faced. While Basso wouldn't finish the contest, he did throw the lion's share of the innings on the night, finishing with five and one-third innings of work while fanning the eight batters and allowing only three hits.
The Aggies (28-19, 16-17 LSC) only recorded 10 hits during the game and drew three walks – but combined with five Greyhound errors, saw runners advancing left and right, leading to the major scoring deficit. ENMU finished with seven hits, led by Jacob Cluff and Keenan Dodd, who went 2-for-5 and a perfect 2-for-2 on the night, respectively.
Eastern's two runs would come in the bottom of the fourth, with Charles Sandberg Jr. and Dodd each driving in a run. The other eight innings saw zeros on the board for the Hounds, who managed to make great contact with the ball all contest, but unfortunately with the strong wind blowing out of right field they would result in only the two aforementioned scores.
The Greyhounds will conclude their season finale with a doubleheader against the Aggies Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. (MT). The team will also be honoring their four seniors – Justin Paul, Dylan Nault, Cluff and Sandberg.
