PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer program battled Colorado Mesa to a 0-0 draw after going into double overtime in the season opener. The tie moves the Greyhounds to 0-0-1 on the young season before facing Westminster (Utah) on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"We fought hard and battled to the end," second year Head Coach
Paul Tate said. "This was a great game to start the season for us. We competed all throughout and I'm proud of the energy by our guys tonight."
Â
Junior keeper
James Gutierrez provided several sensational saves between the pipes for the Greyhounds. With just over a minute to play in regulation, Gutierrez deflected a shot from CMU's Roy Abergil. After the ball caromed off the hands of the Albuquerque, N.M., native, Andres Delgadilo fired off another shot that Gutierrez prevented from finding the netting to preserve the scoreless tie.
Â
"James made several saves to keep us in the game," Tate said. "He played unbelievable. It was great. This was a good first test for our program."
Â
All-in-all, Gutierrez made nine saves and the defense forced 18 shots to miss the mark. Senior
Ryan McManus and junior
Robert Raspudic paced the offense with each having a pair of shots on goal.
